May is here and it’s time to get outdoors and move! From road races to sand castles there is something for everyone to keep you outside, enjoying the warmer temps. The Amtrak Downeaster serves 12 station communities all offering their own unique splash of Summer fun. Plan ahead, book your tickets, and spread the word.
It’s time to put away those snow shovels and get your SPF packed. Let’s go!
Old Orchard Beach
Seasonal service to Old Orchard Beach resumes May 20th. You can purchase tickets to Old Orchard now as long as the travel date is after May 20th. Summer vacation is better at the beach! Save on costly parking fees and get dropped off just steps from the sand.
Lace Up Those Running Shoes (or boots)
The Freeport Chamber of Commerce is back with their annual Boots & Brews 5k Road Race! Arguably one of the coolest 5k races in the state, the Boots & Brews 5k welcomes participants of all ages while reserving some very cool benefits to those over 21+. Check out the website to learn more about registration, what is included, and see how you could take home a pair of iconic L.L. Bean duck boots.
The Amtrak Downeaster is proud to sponsor this event.
Bike Around Brunswick
Or walk! There is no wrong way to explore the Brunswick area. If you prefer to push your body and have the wheels for mountain biking, check out Neptune Woods Mountain Bike Trails. You can take the Downeaster (with your bike) to Brunswick, and ride to the trails in under 20 minutes.
Looking for something closer to the station? Bike to the Swinging Bridge Park and enjoy a slice of history close to home. Experience what is one the last active pedestrian suspension bridges in Maine. Venture to the Bowdoin Campus and explore a smaller section of mature pines and hiking trails known as ‘Bowdoin Pines’ Recreation Area.
Be Prepared
Revisit Amtrak’s requirements for bringing your bike on board. Other items you may consider taking with you such as coolers or backpacks are allowed with restrictions. All of this information can be found here.
